Erik Satie : Gnossienne No.1 for piano

This is the first of six Gnossiennes by Eric Satie. Inspired by dances from the inhabitants of Knossos on Crete, note the lack of barlines which says something about the eccentic originality of the composer. The first three Gnossiennes were composed first and these are available from The Music Room (UK), and the three Gymnopedies can be found at Sheet Music Plus (US).

This piece has also been used in a number of films. An arrangement of the Gnossienne No.1 was used in the film "Chocolat" scored by Rachel Portman, and pianist Lang Lang plays the work in the soundtrack to "The Painted Veil" scored by Alexandre Desplat.
